my name is joe wagner i've been woodturningfor quite a few years and every year at christmas time i make ornaments for my grandchildrenand as gifts for my wife to give away and this is the one that i did lastchristmas the texture on the side of thecap is what i was trying to trying to accomplish and i tried other texturingtools and i was wasn't pleased with them so what i did is i went out and foundthe parts and pieces to make these type of tools it's a knurl and there will bethree different sizes available the quarter wheel is 12 teeth per inch
this is a finer 16 teeth per inch andthe narrow one is 16 teeth per inch also the pattern all depends what you liketo put on, if you like a deeper pattern is the one you want to go with. a littlebit finer pattern use something like this the main thing you want to know, you'llwant to do when you get your tool is oil it on the side, with just some light machine oil and that way it prevents any friction,it is a close tolerance it's a hardened pin with a hardenedknurl, a hardened texting tool and it will prolong the life of thecutter in the tool as well ok when you get ready to dothe knurling or the texturing
you have to have your toolrest down lowso that when you set the tool on it will be at center, the center of the wheel, andit needs to be in line with the center of the piece speed; you want to keep it down toabout four or five hundred rpm you come in here and you line it up. it has to be pretty much a square approach, a straight on approach, for the first bite you run it in and what it gives you is the pattern ifit's not deep enough for you you go back in. you see the lines and setthe cutter back on let it float for a
second, it'll pick back up it'll give you a pattern a little bitdeeper, a little more detailed. as you come around here again you let it float intoyour pattern - you can see there's about four lines. let one of the teeth, orseveral of the teeth, pick up the pattern like so now you have to lean fairly hard because you're not cutting wood you're just denting the wood - putting anindentation in the wood your pattern will go right on around the same way let it pick up the pattern, you can use it around
your pattern carries on. at this point in my ownshop i would quit, reverse the piece finish turning the top down tothe dimensions i'm looking for and then finish knurling up to the shoulder
