bookshelf woodworking plans

i'm thinking of a tool company. don't tell me, don't tell me... microjig. maker of the grr-ripper. work safer, work smarter. i'm standing in our guest bedroom, whichreally doesn't get used as a guest bedroom

bookshelf woodworking plans, that often. it's mainly a craft room for my wife. as we're transforming this room into lessof a bedroom and more into a craft center, we removed the doors off of this closet, removed all of the junk that was in it that we didn't really need

and expanded the room so that she can storeall of her yarn and craft supplies. she painted the inside of this closet thisbrilliantly bright pink color and asked me if i could use white melamineto build the shelves so that it would provide contrast and it will also keep the room bright andcheerful. the idea here is that this is no longer acloset really, but part of the room. i realise all closets are going to be differentsizes, but i do hope at least you'll pick up someideas or maybe be inspired to organize one of your own closets. joining it all together with dados will makeit a lot easier to assemble and it'll give

it extra strength. and wherever possible, i try to make all ofthose dados before i cut all of the pieces down to size. the top and the bottom shelves only get thedados on one side, so i can cut them down to their final lengths now. this part of the sheet will make up the threemiddle shelves, so i'll flip it over and rout out the other side. and really this is just a matter of takingcareful measurements and setting up a fence that i can run my router along to cut thoseâ¾" dados.

now i can cut these three shelves down totheir 9" widths. and finally, with all those dados cut, i cannow cut all the small shelves and dividers that don't need any dados. there's all of the pieces cut and all ofthe dados made, and that's a lot of work. but i can tell you, i've done this kindof construction before and while doing all of this preliminary worktakes a lot of time, it really simplifies assembly. normally, i could start gluing this togetherright now, but the melamine boards are just slightlythicker than my dados.

so wherever that's going to join together,i need to remove that thin white laminate just like i did on this test piece. you have to remove that anyway to get theglue to stick. i put my router back in my table and i puta straight bit in it. and i raised it up just a hair above the topof the table. now it will drop easily into that slot. i can iron on this melamine edge banding toall of the visible edges. i'm going to start to assemble it usingglue and brad nails through the sides that won't be visible. there's a couple of problems with my clampingstrategy.

the first problem is that i don't have astrategy. the second problem is that this is wider thanmy workbench. so i think since this is clamped up, i'mgoing to try to put this side on. maybe i'll flip it up and see if i can clampthe other side. we'll see how it goes. i may end up totally regretting this, buti'm going to flip this over and see if its own weight will help clamp it together. well, a couple of spot checks and it's prettymuch dead-on square. by checking the diagonals, i can tell thati am about an eighth to a quarter-inch off

and that is close enough for me. once in a while things just work out in yourfavor! it's been drying for a couple of hours now, i'm going to see if i can set it back downand apply the rest of the edge banding to the front. okay, i got that big unit put up in the closetand that clears out some room so i can assemble these side shelves. for the adjustable shelves, i need to makea series of equally spaced holes and for that, i'm going to use this shelfpin jig. it has an adjustable cleat on the back thegrabs the edge of your cabinet,

and the i just use a spacer down on one sideto line it up. this â¼" drill bit has a collar on it thatstops from going all the way through the wood. then i can turn it around and do the otherside. <> this is a tight fit! those side shelves actually just wedge thisback in, so i don't need any anchor on it. and that completes this closet makeover. i hope you enjoyed it and i hope you wereable to pick up some ideas to maybe transform one of your own closets.

i like the idea of opening up a closet spaceto the rest of the room. and as always, thank you for watching woodworkingfor mere mortals where i post new woodworking videos every friday, and i'd love to have you subscribe if youhaven't done so already. and i'd like for you to consider subscribingto my second channel, mere minutes, where we discuss all sorts of things woodworking and some things that aren't quite woodworking. thanks for watching! awww...it was microjig!
