hello again this is episode number two today i'm gluing the lid for our project i'll show you the glue i am using and i will show how i make the saw cuts this goes together like this i made this with hand tools, no power tools you might wonder how i make these accurate cuts you can see there's no gaps
how do i make a nice clean cut on the tenons? i will show you how to do that here's a practice piece and i've already made the cut for the cheek this is the tenon and now i will mark and cut this piece off what we first do is... we may have to dissolve in and out of this because i didn't rehearse too much
fancy work bench you got there yeh, i like this a lot i marked this and i know where to make my cut i use a sharp knife and i knife the edge making the cut deeper each time i make very deep cut without cutting myself you can see i have a deep cut
and now i make a groove for the saw you could use a chisel, roy underhill taughtme this technique which works well i just cut that piece out and it gives me a little groove for my saw tofit into let's see how we do also, excuse me put this in here this is called a bench hook the saw fits into the kerf
now i must saw carefully so i have a very accurate cut and if i hold this against it you can see so that's how you do it with a hand saw anyway, on to glueing i like to keep my sharp knives in a wine cork no shortage of those around here ok, let's talk about glue two kinds of glue here
this is yellow glue developed in the 1940's it works very well this is hide glue, and has been aroundfor about 3000 years liquid hide glue came out in 1935 and was invented by the franklin glue company before that time, hide glue was a powder, like beach sand it was mixed with water and you put itin a glue pot and heated to about 140 degrees fahrenheit
you brushed it on and it would cool and harden liquid hide glue has some advantages over yellow glue and that's why we are using it today liquid hide glue has a longer open time the open time of yellow glue is about five minutes and if you have a complex glue up you will have trouble getting everythingassembled in five minutes the open time on this glue is about twentyfive minutes
so you have more time if you'redoing something like dovetails the liquid hide glue is much more useful this glue is made by titebond, andit says on the label it's owned by franklin international the same company that invented liquid glue in 1935 and it is the same formula it's hide glue with an additional chemical that makes it stay liquid at room temperature we'll probably dissolve in and out as we go
because it takes a while to get things together but we will do our best i have my brush i hope i don't make a mistake in front of the camera looks like maple syrup i must not make a mistake i will assemble this now and glue this on first also it is invisible to stains and finishes
unlike yellow glue which clogs the pores and when you stain it you see spots that don't accept the stain you can see how good it is to have a longopen time because would be in trouble by now with yellow glue starting to set up beforei was finished i still have much to do. i put some paste wax on my panel edge the wax resists the glue so if i get some on there
my panel will not glue into the frame it must not stick i put a lot of glue on i just think it's a better way to go i am so glad for the long open time of this glue now, i must not make a mistake look at that squeeze out, ugg, what a mess ah, perfect i measured diagonally, and if these two distances are the same
i know that the lid is square okay, everything looks good that is the end of episode number two, wecan start the stupid music and the camera person is pointing in the direction of.......
