(fast tempo music) marc:you never quite know where life's path is going to lead you. and here we are back in the old shop. if you've followed along on my website, you probably know the story. the house never sold andwe're basically on plan, i don't know, maybe c or d at this point? so this house is goingto stay here and we,
unfortunately, can't sell it for now. so it's more of a long-termplan at this point. that means that the shop iscoming back to this location, after a couple years ofbeing in a three car garage, so i'm pretty excited about it, but it also means there's a lot of work to do. i want to make sure thatit's done right this time. last time, we pulled all the tools in and cobbled everythingtogether, and just built up
over time, but i didn't really look at it from an outside perspectivethe way that i can now. and especially, having workedin the three-car garage, my mentality is totally different as i go into this basically much bigger space. i need the room, but, i think we can do alot with the space now. what i want to show you here is, we're in the front of the shop.
this was the area where i had a planer and a couple of other thingsright in this area, the table saw was over here. things are going to be movedaround just all over the place. this is going to be themain backdrop of the show. most shots that startout with my workbench, with the hand tools behind me, that's going to take place right here. what we need to do, and one of my
big problems with this space, was the fact that it's just this huge open space. i don't know about youguys, but for me, walls, dividers, things thatactually separate parts of the space make it easier toput tools in those areas. a big wide open space isactually a little tricky in terms of getting electricity and everything that you need to those tools. what we're going to do is install.
nicole:by the way, marc:yeah. nicole:everyone watching this is going, "oh, you poor thing! huge open space." marc:oh, i know. but i've said that before. i understand, and i'm verylucky to have an open space. the thing is, i just find it difficult. maybe it's a mental thing.
i find it difficult to arrange my tools if i just have a big open space as opposed to one that has walls and dividers between rooms and things. so what's going to happen here, because my parents arestill going to live here, they need to park in this space, and i'm going to be a little more flexible now than i was last time.
so we're going to keepthe first bay for parking, what'd you say? nicole:i said "unlike last time". marc:unlike last time. nicole:i never got to park in here. marc:i know, it's terrible. there will be a wall erected here. this is going to divide aparking space from the shop. there's going to be adoor to get into this area
if we need to, but this will then be, like i said, the new backdrop. so it's going to be kindof a different thing. but all my hand-tools, myworkbench will be over here, i'm going to have a littleassembly space on this side. but i find that this dividingwall will now give me an area to put cabinetry and lots of storage, electricity on the wall, it's going to be much more functional for me.
because of the airconditioning, the garage doors, the lighting, there's a lotof stuff going on up there, and to tell you the truth, ifwe do ever sell this place, i guarantee you this wallis going to come down, so whatever we do hasto be done good enough that it's not going to fall down, but also easy enough to take downif we actually need to. so what they're going todo, from what i understand, is bring it up about, i don't know
if they were going eight or ten feet, high enough that it'll beout of the camera's view, and then we're going tobasically support it with, i don't even know exactly what it is, but they're going to runstrapping to the ceiling, so that it supports it andstops it from moving around. we'll see what happens. i'm kind of experimenting with this too, but i do trust the contractorthat we're using for this,
he's done some work for us in the past so i trust his opinion. told him what i needed and i'm leaving it up to his professional judgment to make sure that this is sturdy and safe. in addition, this middle doorhere, this is something new too, this door is useless to me from a woodworking perspective, from a shop perspective. i really only need one bigentryway into the shop,
so we're going to put a wall here as well. and once again, top priorityhere is that this stuff can be removed when the time comes. so that's job number one. and let's take a look over here and i'll show you job number two. some major changes on this side because, one thing that always bothered me was, these glass blocks are great, they do let in some light,
but we've got a nice view out there, there's actually a mountain on this side. you've seen in the oldepisodes where i talk about blowing the dust outinto my neighbor's yard, which is all the way over here. there are no neighbors. no one lives over there,it's an empty lot. so there's a beautifulview out this window, and one thing i absolutely loved about
my current shop setup are the windows. now frankly, i don't getto open them very often, because most of the time i'm filming, and the backdrop is the windows, but the days when i'mnot filming it's just, i love opening it andbeing able to see outside, and getting lots of natural light. so one of the things we'regoing to do is add a nice big window here and we're going to add a
second window over in thisside, a little bit further down. that's going to give me quitea bit more natural light. it's going to give me a view, but is it going to be a problem for filming? because, as i said, the primary backdrop for the show is going to be over there. so the natural light is actually going to help keep things well lit. and i won't have to rely on
supplemental lighting quite as much. that's something i'm really excited about. that's what we're have the contractors coming in in a few days to take care of both the wall and those windows. once that's done, then i canstart moving all the tools in, probably get an electrician in here, like i did in the other place. i can do some of thiselectrical work myself,
but, frankly, it's one ofthose peace-of-mind things, i really like knowing that i had it done professionally and that it's 100%. like i said, i know alittle bit about electricity and i could set up a 110 or a 220 outlet, but i really just, at this point, would prefer to haveit done professionally. nicole:as would i. marc:as would nicole.
and my parents are goingto be living in this house, so, for their sake, lets notscrew with the electricity. dust collection-wise, i'mprobably going to put the dust collector in exactlythe same spot it was before, but the tool arrangement isgoing to be pretty unique. like i said, hand tool section over there, used to be against that back wall, so that's completely different. i imagine my table saw willbe somewhere in this area.
this is going to be sort of like, i'm going to call it the power tool nook. and that's where we goto use the power tools. pretty much bandsaw, planer, drum sander, joiner, everything is going tobe focused in this area, that's all the powertool stuff over there. so the dust collection primarily needs to run along this walland then have numerous drops going to all the toolsin that area over there.
over here, against this wall, i'm thinking that we're going to have lumber storage. i can have a short thingthat i won't need a ladder to get on top of, butwe could have the lumber stored here, maybe have avertical storage rack for plywood and things likethat coming out this way. we'll have to see. i don't know exactly. until we get the tools in here it's
going to be hard to tell for sure. the next step is onmonday, i have the guys coming out to do the construction work. i should say at least startthe construction work. and we will get footage here and there. maybe i'll stop in acouple days during the week just to get shots of thingsas they're happening. and then we'll see howthings go from there. pretty exciting.
i've got to finish up the guild build before i can move any tools. and we've got construction do to here. so there's a little bit of awaiting game at this point, but we're pretty excited about it, and hopefully soon you'llbe seeing some episodes coming from the old new old new old shop. yeah, all right, thanks for watching.
