press struck me immediately, it's gotpresence. it''s sturdy, it's obviously wellthought through. powermatic has clearly asked all the questions that drill pressusers have wondered about for the past 10 or 15 years and worked hard toinclude all the answers into the machine. and so it's not only verywell-built, heavy and sturdy, but it's innovative. the mechanical variable speed on the pm2800b is a great feature. in the middle of a project i can't afford to take thetime to adjust and change belts every time i need to change the drilling speedand with the mechanical variable speed
on this machine, i don't have to. nobelt changes means a lot less headaches and a lot more enjoyment during theproject that's for sure. along with the mechanical variable speedon this drill press, powermatic has of course included a handy digital readout.it makes it easy to track your rpm's for optimal spindle speed for anyapplication. if you've used drill presses for any amount of time, you know how important quill travel is. powermatic has done a great thing with this drill press. you can get a full six inches of quilltravel with just one full turn of the handle. it just makes things a lot easierand you spend a whole lot less time
turning the handle. powermatic makes greatfences for all of their machines and the fence on the pm2800b is no exception. what i love about this fence is thatit's adjustable, so that you can easily align a 90-degree angle between thefence and the table. this makes aligning the stock quick andeasy. the adjustable stop, yet anotherexample of why the pm2800b is great to work with. set the material stop inplace, it stays there, making it easy to complete repetitive tasks accuratelyover and over. i really like this laser crosshair system. it makes the ease offinding your center so much quicker. i'm
really enjoying being able to just knowexactly where my drill bit is going to enter the wood without having to spend alot of time lining up the work and the drill bit. thinking back through the years, i can'ttell you how many times i've had to mess around with a chuck or a chuck key that just didn't want to cooperate. thankfully that's a thing of the past.with the keyless chuck that powermatic has these days, things are much easier. i barely even have to think about bitchanges. its in and out and back to work powermatic has really gotten smart withthese handles. depending on which side
you want to operate, or which hand youwant to use, the handles can be reversed, so no matter what's best for you it's simple and easy. it's great to haveled lights in this drill press for a couple of reasons. one, the led lights aregoing to last pretty well for the life of the drill press, but beyond that powermatic hasthought of including two led lights that together combined, to mean that you have no shadows cast on the table while you're working. and that's another simplesolution that's so brilliant. powermatic has built this drill press on anoversized cast iron base. it's rock-solid,
making sure things don't move on youwhile you're working. next the table has the highest quality angle settingmechanism, so no matter what angle you're working with, you can trust that you'llhit it with ease up to a full 90 degrees. and finally powermatic has includedthese handy square table inserts with leveling screws that allow the insert tolay flush with the top of the table. i've always trusted powermatic to maketools that run smoother and more accurately than most of the other toolsthat they compete with. i would say to someone that there's no point in evenlooking at other machines. this machine is the one that you'll buy for the restof your life.
