in this lesson i'm gonna show you how toproperly install a head unit in your vehicle there are a handful acommon tools you will need to install a head unit these include wire stripper wire crimper thought panel removal tool any phillipsscrew driver you also need some stereo installation parts thecommon parts include a wiring harness a mounting kit and if your vehicle callsfor it a antenna adapter the head unit install

is broken up into three main steps: step1: dash assembly step 2 wiring up theharness in step 3 mounting the head unit into thedash let's go over dashed disassembly firstbefore we can work on the vehicle you must disconnect the negativeterminal of the cars battery to prevent a short circuit dash this assembly can be the hardestpart of installing a stereo mainly because if not done correctly damage to the dashwill occur

and most of them will result in a damageclaim to you or your customer's vehicle while damage claims cannot always beavoided we can limit them by understanding withthe main cause of them are the common mistake people make is attempting to disassembly dash that theyare unfamiliar with you end up tugging on panels that have a hidden screw you eventually break the peicefortunately there is a simple fix for this ,if youare installing a new head unit the instructions for thedash assembly

will be included in the mountain kingpackaging the second reason for damage dash panels is using the wrong tool to remove theplastic pieces from the dash these wrong tools include using picktools flat blade screwdrivers and door panelremoval tools all these tools will do is nick scratch and break you or your customer's vehicleyou should only be using non marring plastic panelremoval tools like this one from snap-on these toolsare specially designed not to scratch

delicate services such as a dash plastic piece once the dash is disassembled go aheadand remove the factory antenna and the stereo molex plug the harness that comes with their new cd playercannot directly connected to your vehicle you must first purchase a vehiclespecific adapter these harnesses connect directly fromthe new cd players harness and then plug into the factory stereomolex plug

some harnesses may include custom moduleto interface with today's your vehicle's such as vehicles with on star or vehicleswith data bus system some harnesses will have rca connectionson them to better interface into a premiumfactory amplified sound system aftermarket harnesses are color coded tomatch with the head unit harness so connecting these wirestogether is easy as matching at the colors there are a variety a crimp connectorsused to connect these hearts it together most common are the red connectors andthe snow caps you can also solder these

wires together and apply heat shrink tubing for a moresecure connection start out by prepping both the head unitharness and the vehicle specific harness strip back a half-inch insulation ofeach wire doing this will allow us to insert thewire into the crimp connectors once completed connect the yellow constent to wire ,this wire retains memory forfunctions such as clock eq presets and programmable radiopresets

followed by the red 12 volt switched wirethis wire tells her head you did to turn on when you turn the key to accessoryposition and then the black vehicle ground this wire complete the electricalcircuit what that is complete start with the speaker wires they aredouble grey white, violet, and green wires be aware thatthese wires have a positive and negative marking on them make sure toconnect them accordingly the negative the wire has astripe on it in the positive does not

if the wires are not connected properly it will cause the speakers be at a phaseand bass will suffer in this harness you may or may not havea illumination orange wire if it is there and your head unit harness also has a orange wire go ahead and connect that also if not cap off the wire the crimp connectormoving on you also have two blue wires one has astripe on it that wire is your amp turn on wirethis is used to turn on an aftermarket amp

or premium factory amplifier such asbose, jbl or monsoon connected it the corresponding color onthe head unit output harness to activate aftermarket amp this wire will run down the dash a connectdirectly into the amplifier turn on input the solid blue wire is forpowering a power antenna connect this to the blue lead on thehead unit harness remember some vehicles may not have theactual antenna that motor rises up but these vehicles will still need apower antenna signal activated because they need it to turn on the amplified power antenna

if you have any unused wires on eitherharness make sure the cap them off to avoida short-circuit finally zip tie the harness for a moreprofessional appearance when you remove the factory stereo therewill be a empty area in the dash where the radio used to be amounting kit feels in this gap and provides an area for the new head unitto mount into there are two common types a mountingmethods sleeve mounting and iso mounting ,sleeve mounting iswhere the new head unit is held in place at the dash by ametal sleeve

iso mounting is where the head unitis held in place by side support brackets depending on the type of vehicle youhave you either using the factory brackets or the iso mount brackets includedwith the kit refer to your kit instructions forguidance place a new head unit into the bracket using the supplied i somount screws you will notice there are many mountingpoints on the head unit this allows us to either extend the unitout a little bit or recess it in to sit flush with thedash

when you purchase a new head unit itwill include a sleeve this leave it was secure your head unitto the dash remove this sleeve from the head unitusing the supplied radio removal keys if for some reason you do not have these keys you can bendthat locking points out to remove the head unit from thesleeve just remember to bring them back in so the head unit can log back into place insert the metal cage from the head unit

into the kit, this can be done either onthe workbench or inside the vehicle when the kit ismounted to the dash secure the sleve into the kit by bendingits tabs use a flat blade screwdriver or a cotterpin extractor tool and press as many tabs into the kit aspossible this will create a strong support forthe radio to be secure to the sleeve should not be able to be wiggled upand down easily if it does try pushing more taps intosecurity slide the head unit into the sleeve until youhear a click

once you have completed mounting the unit connect the head units harness to thevehicle and then to the stereo and if yourvehicle required a antenna adapter plug that in also, along withall factory molex plugs sometimes you have a hard time pushing theradio into the dash due to clearance issues caused by the wiring be patient most thetime the wires just need to be rearranged, asa caution before testing the unit do not turn invehicle key to the accesory position while the vehicles molex plugs such ashazard buttons and air bag plugs

are unplugged this can cause the vehicleto throw a check engine code and most the time in only be reset bythe dealer at the factory once all connected check to make sureall the system functions all working properly such as the am andfm radio reception any accessories like ipod adapterssatellite radio it all checks out okay reassemble the dash and conducted a postchecklist of the vehicle pay special attention to the buttons onthe dash such as a heater and ac controls and hazardbuttons, make sure that you have then

plug back in after installing stereo thank thecustomer for his business another satisfied customer wait...did he pay
