i've got this dirt pit just outside my backdoor that's good for nothing except blowing sand on my patio. time to diy that little problem. brainstorming with my wife, she wanted someplanters in that area. i said i wanted a bench so i could at least use it for something. we came toa compromise and decided to combine both of those ideas for a diy planter box bench. the whole thing is made out of 1x4s and afew 1x3s. i'll have the materials and cut list at simply easy diy dot com. check the description. i'll have all the links.

first priority obviously was cutting all myboards to length. a miter saw makes short work of that job no problem. i made sure all my boards where separatedby length and i made sure i wrote that length on one of the boards in each piles so i didn't get them mixed up. i needed a few one by threes so i just tookmy one by fours and ripped them down. it's probably cheaper with less waste if you just buy the one by threes insteadof doing what i'm doing. alright so after all that was done time tostart some assembly. a one by four and a one

by three starts the process for the upperand lower rails of the sides. a couple brads just to make sure the two piecesdon't move while i drive some screws. two of those assemblies for each side, onefor the top and one for the bottom. the vertical slats are then laid in place. with a line of glue. lay a third piece over the top of the sideassembly and attach just like before. i just want to make sure i have an inch and a half overhang on either side. i'll drill for some pocket holes now in orderto attach the four sides of the planters later on.

two of the sides are assembled with a slightdifference. so that's one way. the other two i'm leaving one of the pieces off of it fornow, i'll attach those pieces later on. so i'll lay out all four sides of the boxeson a flat surface. in my case my garage floor. some glue on each of the four overhangs. then just flip the sides up. pocket hole screws on all four sides. i'llhave a materials list on my website simply easy diy dot com if you wanna know what size screws i'm using.

flip the planter upside down and do the samething. now i'll turn the whole thing on its sideand attach that final inside rail on those two sides i mentioned earlier. i'll not be filling the planters with soilas a whole. i'll be placing some plastic planters inside them. so i have taken a measurement for the depthof said planters. transfer that measurement to the inside of my diy boxes and attach a couple ledge pieces. flip it over and repeat the process.

just for the sake of cost effectiveness i'mnot making a completely solid bottom with the slats. i'll pick a couple sides at random to attachtwo more ledge pieces to the outside for the center bench. i've cut some two by threes to length forthe bench portion and i'll lay those between the ledge of one planter box to the ledge of the other one. the depth of the bench seat can be adjustedby messing with the spaces between the bench slats. the height can be adjusted by attaching the ledges higher or lower onthe side of the planter boxes. once i'm satisfied with all that some pockethole screws completes the planter box bench.

well, almost. add some seat cushions and nowwhere ready to go. what a fantastic addition to an ugly dirt pit that is no more. wannasee this project being set up and installed? check out theextended bonus footage over on simply easy homesteading. here's a link for you. hey thanks for watching don't forget to dropme a like or a dislike and subscribe if you haven't. check me out on facebook and pinterest. if you like this video here'sa couple more you'll like as well. until then.
